Electives

1) Caring for Others in a Self-Care Age

with Jill McAlpine

In a world that says "you do you" and “be your authentic self”, we are shaken up when life veers out of our control. In our endeavour to soothe, settle and satisfy our self, all too often we are left lacking. When we widen our lens beyond our individual fragility, we see others. Others, who mirror our struggles, our insecurities and despair. Our biblical instruction is to "love your neighbour as yourself." Let’s consider our self in the context of others, in community, as we explore what turning care inside out may look like, bearing each other’s burdens and facing life together.

2) Are you a product of the Enlightenment?

with Clare Deeves

The Enlightenment of the 18th century has changed the way the western world thinks. What we consider quite normal is actually historically pretty new. But is it Christian? In this elective we’ll look at what the Enlightenment was, how it’s changed our thinking and its influence on us for good and ill.

3) So many choices! How do I decide?

with Brad Vigus

Life is full of choices, my career, my location, who I marry, what I put in the 5-year plan, and much more. But saying yes to one thing means saying no to other things, and in all of that what does God want me to do? How do I get guidance from God for the choices I need to make in life? Join us for an elective of looking at what the Bible says about guidance, and how to make decisions in life that line up with what God wants for your life.

4) Living in true devotion to God

with Allan Chapple

“Devotion” is committed love—and being “true” means devotion that is both right and real. In this elective, we will take a careful look at what the Bible teaches us about true devotion to God; why we find it hard to live this way; how to stay true, resisting the appeal of exciting spiritualities that will lead us astray; and how to live in true devotion to God in the highs and lows of daily life.

5) Help! My life is too busy.

with Al Van Zijl

“The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.” This quote by Michael Altshuler captures so much of how we feel. We feel overwhelmed by the lack of time. We feel like we can't catch up. We feel like we wasted last night. We wonder how to get the perfect work-life balance. If this sounds like you, why not take the time to set a godly framework to think through life's busyness? This elective offers no magical solutions but our hope is that you walk away with some principles and tools to help manage a busy life.
