1 - Bricks, Babel & Chatbots: Building a Christian Framework for Technology
Mastering fire. The wheel. Antibiotics. Sliced bread.
Technology is an inescapable feature of human existence—and in God’s kindness, the source of much good. Yet for all the good that it brings, no technology escapes the influence of human sinfulness.
Arson. Hit-and-runs. MRSA. Gluten allergies.
Is there a distinctly Christian approach to technology? How should our convictions shape the way we use (or refuse) new technologies? And how might this inform our engagement with perhaps the next quantum leap in technology: artificial intelligence?
In this elective, we’ll start unpacking some of the key issues to consider, and begin applying a biblical framework for approaching technology and AI.
2 - Truth and Compassion: Biblical Wisdom for End-of-Life Questions
Death seems like something to talk about later in life. But what would you say to a loved one planning to end their life through Voluntary Assisted Dying? Come and discuss what the Bible says about life and death. Together we'll develop solid principles, delve into grey areas, and cultivate practical skills for bringing God's truth compassionately to our study contexts, workplaces and families.
Contraception is a given in our culture. Should it be a given for Christians? Many of us either never received the memo that there are moral questions to be raised in this area, or are unsure how to go about weighing those questions up. In this seminar we’ll seek to chart a course through some of this together. Doing so will press us to think not just about contraception, but about the place of children within God’s purposes more broadly, how to approach ethical questions which the Bible doesn’t speak about directly, and when it’s ok to agree to disagree.
Society is buzzing with big ideas about gender—but how should Christians respond? In this elective, we’ll break down the key concepts behind feminism and queer theory, so you can understand the conversations shaping our culture today. This isn’t about memorizing labels or just defending a position. It’s about seeing the world through Scripture and learning how to live faithfully and engage thoughtfully and compassionately with those around you. Come prepared to think, discuss, and leave with practical tools to live out your faith confidently in a complex, confusing moment.
The workplace can be like a jungle – unfamiliar, full of unseen challenges and a bit wild at times. How can we keep our faith alive in the difficulties of deadlines, ethical questions, temptations and just coming home exhausted at the end of each day? We'll be exploring the difference that Jesus can and will make for your ethics in the workplace, so that you can not just survive, but thrive in the jungle.
